FFFWeek™ Traveling Tips and Check-Off List:

Last year my blogger buddy, Marie Denee, and myself shared some very useful summer travel tips. So with FFFWeek™ and many other summer vacations coming up I thought I’d repost these tips again. I know alot of you all will be traveling this summer so I compiled a check-off cheat sheet to go by.

“The Bella Styles Casting Call & Modeling Tips”

I’ve been debating whether or not to do this post for a few weeks now but I feel that maybe it may help a few inspiring models along the way. When I held my model call a few weeks ago I had a panel of professionals to assist me with it and a few things were brought to my attention afterwards. Now mind you, my judges have done numerous shows so they have experience and know exactly what to look for and the proper protocol. So with that said, let me share with future models the do’s and don’ts of attending a casting/model call:

1) WEAR HIGH HEELS- That’s the whole point of modeling is to showcase whether or not you can perform in a heel. I wouldn’t suggest stilettos but something that you’re comfortable in with at least 3 inches in height. Now is not the time to show up in your Uggs. Even if you are wearing flats, change them BEFORE you enter the casting venue!

2) HAVE YOUR HAIR PULLED BACK OR OFF OF YOUR FACE- Model scouts want to see your face. If you’re hiding behind long bangs or have blue, green or orange hair that’s an instant turn-off.  A ponytail, wrap or shortcut is the way to go.

3) NO TAMMY FAYE BAKER MAKEUP- I myself love a smoky eye and shiny lips but I know that on a model call it’s best to go as natural as possible. If you have acne, blemishes or any skin discolorations, wear light foundation but not to the point of your natural beauty still doesn’t show.

4) BRING YOUR PORTFOLIO- Even if you don’t have any professional picks, bring a snapshot of yourself. There may not be a photographer at the casting so how will the judges remember who you are?

5) BE ON TIME- If the casting starts at 5pm, be there by 4:45pm. It’s nothing worse than strolling in late. That doesn’t look professional and scouts see that as something that you may do on a paid gig. Not cool.

6) WEAR PROPER UNDERGARMENTS- If you’re a curvy lady, make sure that you have on the proper bra to support your breast and if you know that you have the “muffin top syndrome” please wear a spanx, body magic or whatever to control your tummy area. Please for petes sake don’t wear a “baby tee” on top of all that. You’re guaranteed to get a giant X on your application.

7) GROOMING- Now this is common sense but not everyone adheres to it. Fellas, please be clean shaven and dapper. Ladies, make sure the hair under your arms, face, legs and brows is waxed or whatever. Afterall you are trying to be feminine and lady like.

8 ) FOLLOW THE DRESS CODE- If the model call states that you’re to wear all black don’t show up with a white tee on. Ladies, a nice figure flattering dress would do great for you to accent your shape.

9) DO YOUR HOMEWORK- Research the company that you’re auditioning for. Nothing shows the panel that you’re interested or serious about being a part of their show more than you already knowing who they are, how long they’ve been around and a little bit about who you’re speaking with. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.

10) EXUDE CONFIDENCE- No matter how nervous you may be, show confidence in everything that you do. When you approach the panel give direct eye contact, smile and most of all be polite. One of the models I chose for my show whooed me just from her mannerism. That speaks volumes as to how professional you would be with a client on a shoot or etc.

Next, once you get booked for a show you will need what is called a “model bag”. I personally use a medium-sized rolling suitcase as mine. You will continually add to this case over your career but here are a few basic items that must be in this bag:

1) BUSINESS CARDS- You will meet a lot of models, photographers, designers and other industry people while doing shows. What better way for them to remember you than is with a business card. Companies such as Vista prints offer free deals and great options on cards all the time. You can add you own photo to the card or use one of their designs. Just make sure that you have the pertinent info on your business card. (Name, number, email, website, etc.)

2) SHOES, SHOES & MORE SHOES- I myself am a shoe-fanatic, which you may can tell that already from some of my pics, lol. But when you do shows, you should have a selection of shoes available in all colors. If you are fitted before the show then you already will  know what colors you will need but if not, always have a black shoe, maybe a nude pair and a bootie, weather permitting. A few great places to build your shoe collection is from Barefeet Shoes, Rainbow and even Payless. No need to spend a fortune for show shoes when you’re only on the runway for a few seconds.

3) RESPECT THE CLOTHES- When modeling you are only borrowing these designers’ clothing. So respect them. Wear invisible deodorant, a hair bonnet and unscented lotion. Remember, most of the time these clothes have to be re-sold.

4) BIRTHDAY SUIT- Often when modeling plans change as well as wardrobe. You may have been fitted for one thing and end up wearing something else. So if you have on a one piece body briefer then are changing into a strapless dress, you’re gonna have to come out of that body briefer. So I suggest that if you are not prepared for everyone backstage to see your “goodies”, then wear a thong and maybe a nude bra under your body briefer.

“The Back to MAC Program”

what-does-mac-cosmetics-stand-for

Ok so I know many of my makeup junkies already know this but for those who don’t I must share. MAC makeup has a program called “Back to MAC” where after you have used up 6 products , you can return the empty containers to any MAC counter and get a free lipstick. The only exception they have is on Viva Glam products. 100% of the retail selling price of the Viva Glam products go to organizations that help people living with HIV/AIDS so it is excluded from the program. Although, you can turn in Viva Glam products for the program. MAC cares about the environment and takes back it’s primary packaging to recycle the plastic and materials to re-use for new packaging. In exchange, you get a freebie. If you return your 6 products to an actual MAC store you can get either a free lipstick, lipglass OR eyeshadow. I have been wearing MAC cosmetics since the early 90′s and this program has hooked me up so much and I just had to share the info with you all too.

Don’t Let the Bedbugs Bite!?!?!

Remember when you were young and your parents used to tuck you into bed at night and they would say that famous bedtime quote? “Nighty, nite and don’t let the bedbugs bite”. Well now that saying has more meaning to it than ever. During the past couple of months there has been an outbreak of bedbugs showing up here in the US more than ever. No one or place is immune to it. Famous locations such as the Elle Magazine offices, The Waldorf Astoria Hotel and The Howard Stern Show studios have been affected. Being that I love fashion and mostly blog on this subject this is an important subject to discuss. There are many precautions to take when wearing clothing, sleeping on sheets and everyday circumstances that you must know. I received an email this morning with tips on how to prevent bedbugs so I felt that I must share with my readers:

Since much of our clothing, sheets, towels, etc. now comes from companies outside of America , (sad but true), even the most expensive stores sell foreign clothing from China , Indonesia , etc. The bed bugs are coming in on the clothing as these countries do not consider them a problem. It is recommended that if you buy any new clothing, even underwear and socks, sheets, towels, etc. that you bring them into the house and put them in your clothes dryer for at least 20 minutes. The heat will kill them and their eggs. DO NOT PURCHASE CLOTHES AND HANG THEM IN THE CLOSET FIRST. It does not matter what the price range is of the clothing, or if the outfit comes from the most expensive store known in the U.S. They still get shipments from these countries and the bugs can come in a box of scarves or anything else for that matter. That is the reason why so many stores, many of them clothing stores have had to shut down in NYC and other places. If you buy clothing from a thrift shop or a yard sale, make sure it is washed in hot water before wearing it. All you need is to bring one item into the house that has bugs or eggs and you will go to hell and back trying to get rid of them.

Bella Styles BedBug Tips:

- I get alot of clothing shipped to me from oversees so I suggest before wearing anything, US made or abroad, take it to the cleaners. Especially if it’s a good fabric that you wouldn’t want to shrink in the washer, dry clean it. Here in Virginia we have very inexpensive cleaners called “The $1.99 cleaners. Try a place like that where you can be budget conscious.

-Wash all bedsheets before using them. I don’t care the thread count or what top store you got them from, WASH THEM BEFORE USING!

- When traveling, wrap your luggage in plastic if at all possible. In a terminal recently I saw a traveler with his suitcase all wrapped up and couldn’t figure out why. Now I know. Better safe than sorry.

- When you check into a hotel room, use the luggage stand instead of putting your suitcase on the floor

-I use slipcovers on my sofa. It may just be one of my OCD issues but that way I can wash it whenever I feel like it and not have direct germs, or bedbugs, or the sofa itself

- Use a mattress pad on your bed. A mattress pad is washable and that way you can clean it often and it’s a separator between your actual mattress and your flat sheet

Fashion & Organization Tips That Every Fashionista Should Know:

I just received a package in the mail and in it was a pair of hosiery and it made me think of an old trick to keeping hosiery from ripping and getting runs so quickly. Have you ever heard of putting them in the freezer before you wear them? Yep, that’s the trick. My grandmother taught me that one I believe. I’ve already shared most of these tips with my students when I instructed The Plus Academy VIRGINIA class but I decided I should share with my followers  a few of these tips too. Some of you may know them already but hey, it’s never to late to learn….

- Seperate your jewelry such as rings, earrings and bracelets (real or costume) in ziploc bags (I learned this from Patti LaBelle)

- Hang necklaces on your wall or a cute little stand to keep them from tangling (this can be a great decoration accent too)

- Store shoes in clear shoe boxes to protect them from dust and yet still have visibility to them

- Hang purses on an over-the-door rack or on wall as a decoration ( I also store some of my purses in unused suitcases for storage too)

- Use a 6-drawer tote to seperate your jewelry (once you put them in the ziploc bags)

- Invest in wooden hangers to protect the shoulders of your better quality clothing

- To save closet space and organize clothes, use the “Magic Hangers” which can hold up to 5 items per hanger

- Organize belts with a belt rack

- When traveling seperate clothing & items such as lingerie, socks, t-shirts, makeup & hair products with larger ziploc bags
