Barbie to Introduce Plus-Size Dolls Into The Collection
Being a Mom to a daughter now, I want to emphasize the diversity of various shapes, sizes and ethnicity for our Barbie doll collection. That’s why when I read this morning that barbie is doing just that, I was thrilled.
On Thursday Mattel announced that the now iconic doll will come with three new body types, a plethora of hairstyles, and a few new skin tones as well. This comes after criticism that in real life, Barbie would have to crawl because of her proportions.
The hope is that these dolls will match the diversity of the girls who play with them. Last year Mattel introduced 23 new dolls with different skin tones, hairstyles, outfits and a flat foot, rather than the perpetually arched one meant to fit into sky-high heels.
This year, the dolls will be available in the original size, as well as tall, petite, and curvy body types. They are already on sale on Barbie.com and will hit stores in March.
The new toys allow “the product line to be a better reflection of what girls see in the world around them,” says spokeswoman Michelle Chidoni.
“We believe we have a responsibility to girls and parents to reflect a broader view of beauty,” said Evelyn Mazzocco, senior vice president and global general manager of Barbie, in a company statement.
